Masterclass 1: Contemporary Trends in Parenting Support

Date: Tuesday, 19th September
Time: 1 pm - 4 pm
Venue:  The Boulevard Centre, Floreat

The scientific evidence for the importance of parenting in shaping children’s development and wellbeing continues to build. This workshop will provide an update on recent research on the impacts of parenting on children’s development, as well as an overview of contemporary thinking on the nature and purpose of parenting support. The session will also draw on recent research conducted by the Parenting Research Centre into public perceptions of parenting and a large-scale representative survey of Victorian parents. The aim of the session is to equip decision makers with a way to conceptualise and plan developments in their approaches to improving outcomes for children by enhancing the quality of support offered to parents and carers.

Masterclass 2: Evidence Based Practice in Parenting Support

Date: Wednesday, 20th September
Time: 9 am - 12 pm
Venue:  The Boulevard Centre, Floreat

The momentum to realise a vision of evidence-based practice in child and family services is gaining support. “We just know it works” is no longer compelling to Governments who are increasingly seeking to invest their limited resources in approaches to improving outcomes for children and families that have stronger evidence of effectiveness. Yet, there are real challenges in implementing evidence-based programs in the field. It can take many years for a program to achieve evidence-based practice status through traditional scientific methods, and even then, there are no guarantees that the evidence that is built will translate well across cultures and settings. In the parenting support space, the evidence-based movement has over-relied on programs, many of which are not tailored for the platforms they are subsequently delivered in, and are difficult to implement and sustain. There have been calls recently for a rethink of evidence based practice, and the need to develop services and systems and that can more quickly and flexibly innovate, learn and share learnings with others. This workshop will present an approach to evidence-based practice that is both rigorous, but also practically useful in driving continuous improvement.
